One of the best features of BitNami Stacks is that they are easy to install. This allows users to quickly and easily deploy their favorite open source software regardless of the operating system they are running. BitNami Modules take simplicity a step further by enabling you to easily plug-in additional applications that will automatically run on top of the BitNami platform.

With BitNami Stacks, you get everything that you need to run for each application you install - each stack is a complete, independent runtime. In many cases, a BitNami Stack may be just what you need. In others, you may want to run all of your applications on top of the same stack. This may be because you want to centralize the administration tasks, or maybe you don't want to run multiple Apache or MySQL instances in the same server. This is where BitNami Modules come in. They enable you to integrate and run several applications on top of one open source stack / runtime. The BitNami system allows you to share basic user and system data across applications, as well as easily see which applications and versions are installed and running on your system. This integration will be expanded significantly in later versions.

!http://www.bitnami.com/images/blog/nuevo_php_stacks.jpg(Bitnami PHP based modules)!

Let's take a look at what you can do with BitNami Modules.

Imagine you're someone without much experience in the world of programming and system administration and you'd like to have your own wiki. [Of course, the below also applies to those with the know-how, who just don't want to bother with installing everything manually.] To get started:

Go to "www.bitnami.org":http://www.bitnami.org and take a look to all the BitNami Stacks and BitNami Modules.

You can choose:

a) A BitNami Stack for each application you want to use.

b) The BitNami Platform (BitNami LAMPStack if you are using Linux, or MAMPStack, WAMPStack or SAMPstack if you are using Mac, Windows or Solaris) and the set of BitNami Modules of your choice. Each Module includes a ready-to-plug application that will automatically be installed and configured to run on top of your BitNami Platform installation. You can add several BitNami Modules to one BitNami Platform installation, so all of the resources are shared between the applications.

You want a wiki, but..which one will work best for you? The best way to find out is to give them a try. BitNami Modules are as easy to uninstall as they are to install. Just like BitNami Stacks, they are completely independent. Although they run on top of the same platform, each module is completely separate from the others. Modules can be installed or uninstalled without fear of interfering with the other modules that you have running.

Suppose that you want to deploy BitNami software in your company. You may also need a Content Management System, a Forum, a news system. You tried BitNami on Windows but the server runs Linux. No problem! You can go to BitNami and get all of the same applications for a different platform. The installation process and software versions will be the same across any BitNami-supported operating systems.

!http://www.bitnami.com/images/blog/screenshot_launcher.jpg(Launched application screenshot)!

The best way to understand how BitNami Modules work is to give them a try. Currently, BitNami Modules are only available for PHP applications. Download your BitNami LAMPStack, MAMPStack, WAMPStack or SAMPStack. Try the different modules available on BitNami. And remember, uninstalling them is just as easy as installing, so if you don't like one of the applications, you can just remove it.

We'd really like to get your feedback on this new addition to BitNami. What do you think of BitNami Modules? Do you prefer the the modular architecture, or the self-contained stacks? Please leave your comments in our "forum":http://bitnami.org/forums/forums/27/topics/447 and help us improve BitNami.

It's been hard work, but we are glad to announce that the BitNami Trac Stack (http://www.bitnami.org/product/trac) finally supports Microsoft Windows :)

Quoting from the Trac website (http://trac.edgewall.org),

Trac is an enhanced wiki and issue tracking system for software development projects. Trac uses a minimalistic approach to web-based software project management. Our mission is to help developers write great software while staying out of the way. Trac should impose as little as possible on a team's established development process and policies.

It provides an interface to Subversion, an integrated Wiki and convenient reporting facilities.

Trac allows wiki markup in issue descriptions and commit messages, creating links and seamless references between bugs, tasks, changesets, files and wiki pages. A timeline shows all project events in order, making the acquisition of an overview of the project and tracking progress very easy.

The stack bundles and installs Trac and all its dependencies to make it easy as a cake to start using one of the most powerful and well-known open source bug tracking applications. To be precise, it includes:

* Apache 2.0.63
  * Python 2.4.4
  * mod_python 3.3.1
  * Subversion 1.4.6
  * SQLite 3.5.2
  * Clearsilver 0.9.4
  * PySQLite 2.4.1

Apart from copying the needed files, the installer itself is able to create your own Subversion repository and link it to a project (also created by the installer!) so everything will be ready to run by the time you click the 'Finish' button.

We hope you enjoy the installer and that it makes your life easier by taking care of installing everything (which can be a real pain, believe us) for you. You can give feedback or ask for help in the Trac subforum, at http://bitnami.org/forums/forums/18

The BitNami Project has been created to help spread the adoption of freely available, high quality, open source web applications. BitNami aims to make it easier than ever to discover, download and install open source software such as document and content management systems, wiki, blogging software and more collaborative software.

More and more people are adopting open source software not only due to the minor cost but also because of the possibilities of customization the open source software offers. An important area of open source software development is focused on web applications. Web applications are used to provide multi-user environments where the user is not chained to a specific machine but he and other users can access the (remote) application through the web browser. This reduces the total cost of ownership and is easier to maintain than separate desktop applications. Unfortunately, the main problem the user faces when installing a web application is that usually the installation and configuration of these applications is not an easy task. Web applications are most of the time not self contained and require a web server, a database and a runtime parser (php, java, ruby, python, ...) to be up and running. On Unix platforms the complexity is even greater as the installation of the servers and runtime can involve compiling and a lot of dependency issues to resolve.

This is the point where BitNami comes into play.

**BitNami Stacks are built with one goal in mind: to make it as easy as possible to install open source software.**

A BitNami Stack is a single file installer which is completely self contained and includes all the runtime dependencies the application needs. This allows you to try out almost any popular open source application in just a few clicks. No more dependency solving, no more compilation nor configuration...just Click and Run!

You don't necessarily need to be an open source beginner to enjoy BitNami. As a well experienced system administrator you can also benefit from BitNami, just by the simple fact that you will save lots of time installing the latest hot new Wiki. Are you disappointed with the application you just tried? No problem, just run the BitNami uninstaller and your system will be as it was before. Since it is really easy to use, it is ideal for quickly setting up testing and development environments.

Currently BitNami supports applications written in PHP, Java, Python, Ruby and Jruby. A complete list of all applications (which can be downloaded freely by the way!) is available here. Among them are for example KnowledgeTree, Mantis, Drupal, Dokuwiki and phpBB together with many other blogging, bug-tracking, CMS, ECM, wiki's, etc. applications.

Don't worry about your operating system not being supported, as we provide Windows, Linux, Mac OS X and even Solaris installers!

As an example we stepped through the installation of the Joomla! Stack on Windows. The installation process is similar for all BitNami installers, even if they are based on different technologies or if you are installing them in a different platform. Some of them are focused on developers so during the installation process you may be asked to input a little more information to configure the stack for a development environment. You can find more information in the Readme file that it is included in the installation.

The installation process of a BitNami Stack is so simple that you can't even imagine how many time you just saved compared to installing all the required programs and dependencies by yourself! If you want to discover it, just take a look into the graphic overview below for the main base stacks in BitNami.

The operating system lies in the very bottom of the stack, while the application is at the top. Between them, all the needed dependencies are installed. The blue coloured components are included in all the stacks, while the green may or may not be bundled. For example, BitNami LAMPStack, which is a PHP based stack, installs Apache, MySQL, PHP and phpMyAdmin, while in BitNami Drupal Stack the Drupal application is also included.

A Python developer can enjoy the BitNami Django Stack that bundles this powerful framework for Python development with a complete environment with the Python runtime, the MySQL database server and the Apache HTTP server to run her Python web applications.

BitNami also commits with Ruby lovers and after installing the BitNami RubyStack you will find a configured, ready to use environment with Apache, MySQL, Rails and a number of extensions such as Mongrel and ImageMagick.

Some of the more attractive stacks for developers that you can find in BitNami are those based on Project Management applications like Trac (a python application) or Redmine (a ruby application). Together with one of these management applications, we bundle the Subversion version control system for your convenience.

In BitNami you’ll also find some of the most important open source web applications based on Java like Roller. The BitNami Roller Stack provides an easy as cake installation of this popular Java blogging system. In case you already have Java installed on your system, you can choose to download the "no-jdk" versions which do not include a Java kit. Although if you wish to try a stack independent from the rest of your system, we advice you to download the complete version.

We would like to present you today "Silas's":http://bitnami.org/forums/users/268 howto. It may be very helpful for bunch of you. It is based on "this":http://bitnami.org/forums/forums/20/topics/249 post.

Thanks "Silas":http://bitnami.org/forums/users/268 once again.

"Thought I would make this a new topic. It collates information relating to getting a good development environment running on a windows box (for free):

After following these steps you should have an Aptana RadRails intstalltion, which RubyStack's Ruby, Rails, ImageMagick and other libraries, and provides visual debugging.

# Download and Install:
** RubyStack - http://bitnami.org/stack/rubystack
** Aptana Studio - http://www.aptana.com/studio/download
# Configure:
** Aptana
*** Open Aptana, run Help > Aptana Studio Start Page.
*** Under the central Languages division, find Ruby on Rails, click Install.
**** Check 'Aptana RadRails', but UNCHECK the 'Aptana RadRails Integration' descendant (this will cause a problem if you do not use MyLyn).
**** Install and Restart
*** Open Window > Preferences > Ruby > Installed Interpreters
**** Click Add RubyVM, enter {RubyStack root directory}\ruby in the RubyVM home directory' field'
**** Check the RubyVM you just added as the default interpreter
*** Open Window > Preferences > Rails > Configuration
**** Enter the path to the RubyStack Rails, Rake, and Mongrel Rails executables, respectively:
***** {RubyStack root directory}\ruby\bin\rails
***** {RubyStack root directory}\ruby\bin\rake
***** {RubyStack root directory}\ruby\bin\mongrel_rails
*** Open Window > Preferences > Ruby > Debugger
**** Check 'Use ruby-debug library'
** Ruby:
*** Run {RubyStack root directory}\use_ruby.bat
**** Enter the command:
***** gem install -y ruby-debug-ide
# Environment Variables (replace C:\RubyStack with your {RubyStack root directory}):
** Open Control Panel > System Properties > Advanced
*** Click Environment Variables
**** Edit 'PATH' and prepend:
***** C:\RubyStack/sqlite;C:\RubyStack/subversion\bin;C:\RubyStack/imagemagick;
C:/RubyStack/php;C:\RubyStack/mysql\bin;C:\RubyStack\ruby\bin;
**** Add the variable 'MAGICK_CODER_MODULE_PATH', with value:
***** C:\RubyStack/imagemagick\modules\coders
# Then you are finished.

Now, when you run Aptana you should be able to add/start ruby servers in debug mode or otherwise. Additionally any features used in your application residing in RubyStack should work.

Note that this breaks the containment of RubyStack, and it would be easy to call the scripts/setenv.bat file from another batch file before opening Aptana to achieve the same effect without altering environment variables."

If you have read the previous post about installing services on Linux (What, you haven't? Do it now!), you will have a
rough idea on how init and the rc.d scripts work. On OSX, launchd is the tool that replaces them both. launchd is invoked by the kernel while booting the
system and takes care of managing the processes, just as init does. To interact with launchd there is a tool called launchctl, which will be used in this tutorial.

The daemon scripts are located at /Library/LaunchDaemons. Only the
system administrator has the permissions to write there, so take into account that you will need admin rights to follow the next steps.

Write a properties file (which is a type of file with .plist extension that Apple uses for configuration), in /Library/LaunchDaemons. For example,
let's say we want the Drupal Stack to be started at boot time. We would create the file /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.bitnami-drupal.service.plist

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
        <key>Label</key>
  <string>com.bitnami-drupal.services</string>
        <key>ProgramArguments</key>
        <array>
                 <string>INSTALLDIR/ctlscript.sh</string>
                 <string>start</string>
        </array>
        <key>UserName</key>
        <string>root</string>
        <key>RunAtLoad</key>
        <true/>
        <key>OnDemand</key>
        <false/>
</dict>
</plist>

Remember to substitute INSTALLDIR with your current installation path!

When you reboot the machine, the servers will be automatically started. Man, that was easy! If you prefer not to reboot,
just use launchctl tool to start the service

launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.bitnami-drupal.service.plist

To uninstall the service, type

launchctl unload -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.bitnami-drupal.service.plist

and delete the properties file
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.bitnami-drupal.service.plist so that it isn't launched at boot time.

Allow me to give you a little introduction on the subject prior to the
proper howto. The Linux boot process can be split
up in three steps:

* Loading the kernel
* Device detection and configuration
* Granting control to 'init'

The 'init' program is a daemon that spawns all other processes in the
system. It is responsibe for loading the system
using initialization scripts, which are usually found at /etc/init.d.
There are two ways for init to operate, BSD and
SystemV. Typically, Linux systems use SystemV, though there are
distributions like Arch Linux or Slackware that use BSD.

The runlevel is a number used to identify the mode in which the
computer is. For example, a runlevel 0 would mean that
the computer is halted, while changing the runlevel to 6 would make
the computer reboot. There are 7 runlevels.
Runlevels from 1 to 5 usually differ in the programs that are
automatically started. Typically, runlevel 3 is used to
boot in text-only mode, while runlevel 5 will start the X server and
the desktop environment.

For each runlevel, there is a folder named rcN.d (where N stands for
the runlevel number) which contains symbolic links
to the some of the scripts located at /etc/init.d.

When changing the runlevel, what the system does is:

* Changing directory to /etc/rcN.d or /etc/rc.d/rcN.d (depends on the
distribution).
* All the scripts that begin with K are executed in alphabetical order
with the argument 'stop'. Usually there are
numbers after the K to be able to control the exact execution order.
* All the scripts that begin with S are executed in alphabetical order
with the argument 'start'. As before, numbers are
used to sort the scripts before execution.

If you want to learn more, you can find information about init and runlevels at:

<notextile>
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Init
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runlevel
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-7.2-Manual/ref-guide/s1-init-boot-shutdown-init.html
http://linux.about.com/od/commands/l/blcmdl8_init.htm

</notextile>

Now lets get our hands dirty and learn how to make the BitNami stack
servers start at boot time :) Bear into mind that
you will need root privileges to do it.

- Debian-like distribution (Debian, Ubuntu, etc)

1. Copy the installdir/ctlscript.sh file to /etc/init.d . It is
advisable to rename this script to something more specific, like "bitnami-drupal".

cp installdir/ctlscript.sh /etc/init.d/bitnami-drupal
2. We will use rc-update.d to add the script to the desired runlevels.

   update-rc.d -f bitnami-drupal start 80 2 3 4 5 . stop 30 0 1 6 .

As you can see, we define the priority (80 for start and 30 for stop) and the runlevels in which the script will be executed. The result of this command will be something like

Adding system startup for /etc/init.d/bitnami-drupal ...
/etc/rc0.d/K30bitnami-bitnami-drupal -> ../init.d/drupal
/etc/rc1.d/K30bitnami-bitnami-drupal -> ../init.d/drupal
/etc/rc6.d/K30bitnami-drupal -> ../init.d/bitnami-drupal
/etc/rc2.d/S80bitnami-drupal -> ../init.d/bitnami-drupal
/etc/rc3.d/S80bitnami-drupal -> ../init.d/bitnami-drupal
/etc/rc4.d/S80bitnami-drupal -> ../init.d/bitnami-drupal
/etc/rc5.d/S80bitnami-drupal -> ../init.d/bitnami-drupal

And that's it, the servers will be loaded at boot time. To revert
the changes, just type

update-rc.d -f bitnami-drupal remove

- RedHat-like distribution (Red Hat, Fedora Core, CentOS, Suse, etc)

1. Copy the installdir/ctlscript.sh file to /etc/init.d . It is
advisable to rename this script to something more specific, like "bitnami-drupal".

cp installdir/ctlscript.sh /etc/init.d/bitnami-drupal

2. You have to modify the script a little bit to make it work at
boot time. Just add the following lines at the beginning of the file

<notextile>#!/bin/sh
#
# chkconfig 2345 80 30
# description: BitNami Service
</notextile>
This means that the script will be executed in runlevels 2, 3, 4
and 5, with priority 80 to start, and 30 to stop.

3. Now, you only need chkconfig to install the script as a service.

chkconfig --add bitnami-drupal

And you're done. To revert the changes, we will use chkconfig again

chkconfig --delete bitnami-drupal

That's all! If you have comments or suggestions, please post at the
following topic on the forums

We're happy to announce that two new stacks have been added to the lineup: Django and Tracks.

Django is a high-level Python Web framework that encourages rapid development and clean, pragmatic design. Developed and used over two years by a fast-moving online-news operation, Django was designed to handle two challenges: the intensive deadlines of a newsroom and the stringent requirements of the experienced Web developers who wrote it. It lets you build high-performing, elegant Web applications quickly. The Django BitNami stack is currently available for Linux and OS X.

Tracks is a very cool Ruby on Rails web-based application that helps you implement David Allen's Getting Things Done methodology. The main editing functions are implemented with Ajax, so Tracks is very fast and easy to use. It also includes a lot of great features like RSS feeds and iCal exports.

We're happy to announce the release of JRubyStack for Linux, Windows and OS X.

JRuby is a 100% Java implementation of the Ruby programming language. It is Ruby for the JVM. JRuby provides a complete set of core "builtin" classes and syntax for the Ruby language, as well as most of the Ruby Standard Libraries.

The BitNami JRubyStack includes ready-to-run versions of JRuby, Rails, Java, Tomcat, GlassFish gem, MySQL and Subversion. With JRubyStack you can:

* Develop your JRuby on Rails application using Java from Ruby.
    * Launch your application with the GlassFish server thanks to the GlassFish gem.
    * Make a .war file out of your application in 3 simple steps (see Quick Start Guide for details).
    * Deploy it to the bundled Tomcat.
    * Commit and Checkout your code with the subversion client.

Check it out and let us know what you think in our forums.

Several members of the BitNami team just hopped on a plane to Brussels to attend FOSDEM, a yearly meeting for FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) developers. If you'd like to meet up with them, you can get in touch by sending an email to info@bitnami.com.

There are a ton of cool talks planned on hot topics such as virtualization,
web development, build systems, patents, games, etc. If you're not able to attend in person, you can still
attend to the talks thanks to
the live stream being provided.

Now that virtually all BitNami Stacks are available on Linux, Windows and OS X, we're working on porting them to Solaris. We just released Solaris Sparc and x86 stacks for Drupal, Joomla!, Wordpress, and Mediawiki. If there's a stack you'd like for us to port to Solaris, please leave a comment in our forums.

Subversion has been leading the BitNami poll for some time now, so we are happy to announce that the BitNami Subversion stack has been released! We currently have support for Linux, Windows and OS X, and we'll be releasing a Solaris version shortly.

You can download the stack from the Subversion page.

Asterisk and Openbravo are now leading the polls. If your favorite app. isn't near the top of the list, vote for it!

We are big fans of Ruby and we have a number of Rails-related projects, including packaging RedMine and the BitNami site itself. We created RubyStack as a way for others to get started with Rails quickly and easily. RubyStack is an all-in-one package that automatically installs and configures Apache, MySQL, Ruby, Rails and a number of commonly used packages such as Mongrel and ImageMagick. It even includes PHP and phpMyAdmin as a convenient tool for managing MySQL. The installations are self-contained and preconfigured, so they do not mess with your system an makes setting up development and test environments a snap.

We are proud to announce that this week we managed to get RubyStack 1.0 out of the door. This release adds support for Windows, OS X on x86 and PPC (Tiger and Leopard) and most versions of Linux. You can now share the same environment on multiple machines and operating systems. Ain't that something?

This release contains the following components:

Ruby 1.8.6

RubyGems 0.9.4

Rails 2.0.2

ImageMagick 6.3.5

Subversion 1.4.5

SQLite 3.5.1

MySQL 5.0.45

Apache 2.2.6

PHP 5.2.5

phpMyAdmin 2.11.2

Download the RubyStack Installer.

So, here is the deal... our PR budget was 20$ and Pieter spent it on beer last weekend (the little rascal). That left us with no choice but to take advantage of the wisdom of crowds, the long tail, ajax, REST and photoshop to create the ultimate web 2.0 mashup product announcement (to tell you the truth we are still trying to figure out what the heck a mashup is, but we did it anyway).

Please see below for some reactions from the blogosphere on the watershed release of RubyStack 1.0, including David and Matz themselves.

We just released a stack for <notextile>Alfresco</notextile>, which has been leading the BitNami polls for the last few weeks.
